Energy Recharge Is a Ratio, Not a Feeling
Every Energy Recharge (ER) requirement in Genshin Impact comes from the same deterministic equation: your Burst costs X Energy, your rotation generates Y Energy, and your ER% is the multiplier that closes the gap. Once you understand the ratio, you never need to guess a breakpoint again — and you can spot bad advice instantly.
The core formula used by ER QuickCalc for every team simulation is:
Required ER% ≈ (Burst Cost ÷ Energy Generated per Rotation) − 1
Where "Energy Generated" is the sum of every particle and orb your character actually catches, multiplied by the absorption modifiers below. This guide walks through each piece, then gives you role-based targets you can apply to any team.
How Particles and Orbs Work
Characters generate Elemental Particles (small, from skills and some passives) and Elemental Orbs (large, from defeating enemies and 30% HP thresholds). Their energy value depends on two factors: element match and who is on field when they are caught.
| Source | Same Element, On-Field | Same Element, Off-Field | Different Element, On-Field | Different Element, Off-Field |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Particle | 3.0 | 1.8 | 1.0 | 0.6 |
| Orb | 6.0 | 3.6 | 2.0 | 1.2 |
| Neutral particle (Favonius) | 2.0 | 1.2 | 2.0 | 1.2 |
Three rules fall out of this table and explain almost every ER number in the game:
- Same-element particles are worth 3× more than different-element ones. This is why teammates sharing an element is the single strongest energy solution.
- Being off-field cuts your gain by 40%. A Burst support that catches its own particles off-field needs roughly 67% more ER than if it caught them on-field.
- Flat energy (Raiden's burst refund, Favonius procs, Xingqiu C6) ignores ER entirely. It is added after the multiplier — that is why battery effects feel so strong.
ER% multiplies everything in the table. At 150% ER, a same-element on-field particle is worth 4.5 Energy; at 200%, it is worth 6.0. That multiplier is the dial your build turns.
Role-Based ER Requirements Matrix
Your role in the rotation determines your ER more than any other factor. ER QuickCalc's simulations group characters into three archetypes. The table below assumes a standard 20-second rotation with no Favonius weapons and no external batteries:
| Archetype | Typical Burst Cost | On-Field Time | ER Target Range | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hypercarry (on-field DPS) | 70–80 | High (>10s) | 120%–140% | Catches everything at 1.0× and drains enemy orbs directly |
| Off-field DPS (sub-DPS) | 70–80 | Low (<4s) | 180%–230% | Pays the 0.6× off-field penalty; Emblem set converts ER into damage |
| Battery / Support | 60–80 | Medium (swaps) | 160%–220% | High skill-cast frequency offsets cost; usually catches teammates' particles |
| Dual-DPS (e.g. Xiangling without Bennett) | 80 | Low | 220%–260% | Worst case: high cost, no battery, off-field catch |
These ranges collapse dramatically when a battery joins the team. Bennett alone can pull Xiangling from ~220% down to ~180%; Raiden Shogun's refund can drop it to ~150%. Team composition moves the number more than any artifact roll.
Worked Example: Xingqiu Solo (The Clean Case)
Xingqiu is the perfect first example because every number is deterministic. His Burst costs 80 Energy, his Skill generates 5 Hydro particles on a 21-second cooldown, and with Sacrificial Sword he can cast it twice per rotation.
Rotation: Sacrificial Sword double proc → 10 Hydro particles, all caught on-field by Xingqiu.
- Energy gained = 10 particles × 3.0 (same element, on-field) = 30 Energy
- Required ER = (80 ÷ 30) − 1 = 167%
That is exactly why the community standard for solo Xingqiu with Sacrificial Sword sits at 170–190%: the extra ER absorbs rotation variance, missed catches, and Sac procs that fail to trigger. Without Sacrificial Sword (one cast, 5 particles = 15 Energy), the same math demands 80 ÷ 15 − 1 = 433% — impossible — which is why every serious Xingqiu build either runs Sacrificial, Favonius, or a second Hydro teammate. The ratio explains the artifact.
Worked Example: The Xiangling Paradox
Xiangling has an 80-cost Burst, and her Skill (Guoba) generates only 3–4 Pyro particles per cast on a 12-second cooldown — and often while she is off-field. Caught off-field, those particles are worth 1.8 Energy each, not 3.0.
With Bennett as the classic battery: Bennett's tap Skill generates 2–3 Pyro particles every 5 seconds. Over a 20-second rotation, two Bennett skills (~5 particles) and one Guoba cast (~3.5 particles) give roughly 8.5 Pyro particles. If Xiangling catches them on-field: 8.5 × 3.0 = 25.5 Energy → 80 ÷ 25.5 − 1 ≈ 214%. If Bennett catches and funnels them (same math, slightly better timing), the practical target lands at the well-known 180–200% for National teams.
Remove Bennett and the same rotation produces under 10 Energy for Xiangling — pushing her to 220–260% and forcing Emblem + ER Sands + a Favonius teammate. This is the single most common ER trap in the game: building Xiangling for the team you wish you had instead of the team you actually run.
How Weapons Change the Equation
Weapon ER substats are the cheapest ER in the game — they cost you no artifact rolls. At max level:
| Weapon | ER Substats (Lv90) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Engulfing Lightning (R1) | 55.1% | Also converts ER to ATK — Raiden's best-in-slot |
| The Catch (R5) | 45.9% | Free from fishing; best F2P polearm for burst DPS |
| Favonius Lance / Sword / Bow (R5) | 30.6% | Generates 6 neutral particles (12 Energy) on crit — team battery |
| Sacrificial Sword (R3+) | 61.3% | Double skill proc doubles particle generation (Xingqiu) |
A Favonius proc is effectively 12 flat Energy spread across the team — it ignores the off-field penalty entirely, which is why Favonius on a support is often worth more than a damage weapon.
Common ER Mistakes We See in Teams
- Over-ER on hypercarries. Excess ER above the breakpoint is a direct damage loss on characters that don't use Emblem. 120–140% is a target, not a floor.
- Ignoring the off-field penalty. A 0.6× catch costs you 40% of every particle. If your sub-DPS is off-field when its particles drop, you are building ER to fix a rotation problem.
- Forgetting enemy orbs. Defeating enemies and crossing HP thresholds drops orbs worth 6 Energy same-element on-field. High-density Abyss floors cover a surprisingly large share of your energy budget.
- Building ER before checking the team. The same character needs 150% in one team and 240% in another. Build for the actual rotation, not a website's default.
How to Use ER QuickCalc for Your Team
Once you understand the ratio, use the tool to eliminate the guesswork:
- Select your four characters — the calculator loads each one's real burst cost, skill cooldowns, and particle output from its engine database (the same numbers used throughout this guide).
- Set weapons, constellations, and rotation length — Favonius procs, Sacrificial double casts, Raiden refunds, and C6 flat energy are all simulated, not approximated.
- Read the per-character ER output — the simulation returns the minimum ER each character needs to burst on cooldown in your rotation, not a generic range.
- Tune from there — if the number looks high, add a battery or Favonius support and watch it drop 30–50% before you spend a single artifact.
The role matrix in this guide gives you the starting range; the calculator gives you the exact number. Use the range to sanity-check the tool, and the tool to fix your build.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 200% ER too much?
Not for an 80-cost off-field Burst DPS without a battery. It is too much for an on-field hypercarry with 60-cost. The number is meaningless without the role and team context.
Does ER affect energy from defeating enemies?
Yes for orbs — but not flat energy refunds like Raiden's or Xingqiu C6's. Flat energy is added after the ER multiplier.
Emblem of Severed Fate or ER Sands first?
For off-field DPS: Emblem set, then ER Sands until your breakpoint, then ER substats. Emblem converts ER into Burst damage (25% of ER above 100%, capped at 75% bonus), so ER is never fully wasted on those characters.
Why does my rotation still fail at the recommended ER?
Usually a catch problem: you swapped off-field before the particles arrived, or the enemy died before orbs dropped. ER targets assume you actually catch what you generate.
