What is the Driver Archetype?
The Driver archetype represents characters who spend the majority of their time on-field, actively controlling combat while the rest of the team provides off-field damage, buffs, and particle generation. Think of characters like Raiden Shogun in Hypercarry teams, Neuvillette in Driver comps, or Tartaglia in International—they're the "driver" steering the team's rotation.
💡 Quick Definition: A Driver character stays on-field for extended periods (high field time %), catching particles generated by their teammates' off-field abilities.
How Driver Works in ER QuickCalc
When you select the Driver archetype for a character in ER QuickCalc, the calculator adjusts the particle reception probabilities to reflect their extended on-field time. Here's what happens behind the scenes:
- Higher self-particle catch rate: Driver characters have a significantly higher probability of catching particles generated by teammates (typically 50-75% compared to 10-30% for other archetypes).
- Field time estimation: The calculation engine assumes the Driver spends most of the rotation on-field, maximizing their exposure to off-field particle generation.
- On-field passive triggers: Some passive talents and constellation effects only activate for "active" or on-field characters—the Driver archetype ensures these bonuses are correctly applied.
Why Only One Driver Per Team?
One of the most important restrictions in ER QuickCalc is the one Driver per team rule. This isn't just a UI limitation—it reflects the fundamental reality of Genshin Impact's combat system:
Only One Character Can Be On-Field
In Genshin Impact, only one character can control combat at any given time. If you mark two characters as "Driver," you're implying both have high field time—but that's mathematically impossible. The particle distribution would be undefined, and ER calculations would become inaccurate.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Trying to set both Raiden and Tartaglia as "Driver" in the same team. In reality, only one can have the majority of field time—choose the one who spends more time on-field during your rotation.
Calculator Enforcement
When you assign the Driver archetype to a character, ER QuickCalc automatically disables the Driver option for all other team members. You'll see:
- A purple "Driver" badge on the character card
- The Driver option becomes greyed out in other character's archetype selectors
- A tooltip explaining: "Only one Driver allowed per team (currently: [Character Name])"
When to Use Driver vs. Other Archetypes
Choosing the correct archetype is critical for accurate ER calculations. Here's a decision tree:
Use DRIVER when:
- Character has the longest field time in the rotation (50%+ of total rotation duration)
- Character stays on-field while others trigger off-field abilities (Raiden Hypercarry, Neuvillette Driver)
- Character relies on catching particles from teammates' off-field skills/bursts
Use SELF_SUSTAIN when:
- Character generates AND catches their own particles (Xiao, Wanderer)
- Character doesn't rely on teammates for energy
Use FUNNELING when:
- Character receives particles from a dedicated battery (Xiangling ← Bennett, Raiden ← Sara)
- You intentionally swap in to catch specific particles
Use DISTRIBUTED when:
- Quickswap teams with rapid rotations (National, Kazuha teams)
- No single character has dominant field time
Driver Archetype Examples
Raiden Hypercarry
Team: Raiden (Driver) / Sara (Funneling) / Kazuha (Distributed) / Bennett (Self-Sustain)
Raiden spends ~7 seconds on-field during Musou Isshin, catching particles from Sara's Skill/Burst, Kazuha's Burst, and Bennett's Skill. She's the clear Driver.
Neuvillette Driver
Team: Neuvillette (Driver) / Furina (Distributed) / Kazuha (Distributed) / Xingqiu (Funneling)
Neuvillette's Charged Attacks keep him on-field for extended periods, catching particles from Furina's Burst pets, Xingqiu's Rainswords, and Kazuha's Skill.
Tartaglia International
Team: Tartaglia (Driver) / Xiangling (Funneling) / Bennett (Self-Sustain) / Kazuha (Distributed)
Childe's melee stance lasts ~10 seconds, making him the on-field Driver while Xiangling's Pyronado deals massive off-field damage.
Special Calculator Features for Driver
1. PARTY_ACTIVE Passive Talents
Some passive talents only apply to "active" (on-field) characters. For example:
- Dori ESPECIAL (Alcazarzaray's Exactitude): Grants +7.2 flat energy to the connected on-field character
ER QuickCalc automatically detects when a character has the Driver archetype and applies these bonuses. Non-Driver characters won't receive PARTY_ACTIVE effects.
2. On-Field Constellation Effects
Similar to passives, some constellations require the character to be on-field. The calculator filters these effects based on the Driver archetype assignment.
3. Visual Indicators
To help you identify the Driver at a glance:
- Purple "Driver" badge on the character card in Equipment Page
- 🚗 Emoji icon in the archetype selector
- Purple highlight when Driver is selected
- Restriction tooltip on disabled Driver options
Common Driver Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Mistake #1: Marking Support as Driver
Wrong: Bennett set as Driver in Raiden Hypercarry
Correct: Raiden as Driver, Bennett as Self-Sustain
Bennett spends minimal time on-field (just Skill tap). Raiden's 7s Burst field time makes her the Driver.
❌ Mistake #2: Confusing Driver with Battery
Wrong: Sara set as Driver because she "drives" Raiden's energy
Correct: Sara as Funneling (she funnels particles TO Raiden)
"Driver" refers to field time, not energy generation. Sara is a battery (generates particles) but not a Driver (low field time).
❌ Mistake #3: Using Driver in Quickswap Teams
Wrong: Xiangling as Driver in National Quickswap
Correct: All characters as Distributed
True quickswap teams have no dominant on-field character. Everyone rotates rapidly, so Distributed is the correct archetype.
How to Change Driver Assignment
If you need to switch which character is the Driver:
- Find the current Driver character (look for the purple badge)
- Click their Archetype selector dropdown
- Choose a different archetype (Self-Sustain, Funneling, or Distributed)
- The Driver option will now be re-enabled for all other characters
- Select the new Driver from another character's archetype dropdown
