Introduction
You want to know one thing: can your carry work without their usual teammate, or is the team held together by energy glue?
This post uses Zibai (your carry) and Columbina (the usual support) as a shorthand for that question. The answer is almost always about Energy Recharge and rotation structure.
If you want the fast version: run the team in ER QuickCalc, remove the support, and compare the ER targets. If the ER jumps, the duo was doing more battery work than you thought.
What "without Columbina" really means
In Genshin, Bursts are not "free". Every rotation has an energy budget:
- Energy spent: Burst costs (40 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90)
- Energy earned: particles, orbs, Favonius procs, and funneling
When you remove a teammate, you usually remove:
- their particle generation
- their element (same-element particles are worth more)
- their Favonius triggers (white particles)
- their funneling patterns (who is on-field when particles arrive)
Energy rules that matter (no spreadsheet required)
- Same-element particles give more energy than off-element particles.
- The active character catches full value; off-field teammates get less (funneling matters).
- Orbs are worth about three particles.
- Favonius weapons can cover a surprising amount of missing energy, if you can crit reliably.
You do not need perfect counting for this check. You just need to know if your team is energy-positive or energy-starved.
The ER Independence Checklist
1) Can Zibai pay their Burst bill?
Start with two questions:
- What is the Burst cost, and how often are you casting it?
- Does the rotation length match the Burst cooldown, or are you forcing early casts?
If you are trying to Burst every 18 seconds on an 80-cost kit with low particles, you will need heavy ER no matter what.
2) Where does the energy come from?
List your reliable sources per rotation:
- Skill particles from each teammate
- Enemy drops (these vary a lot by content)
- Favonius procs
If Columbina was the main particle engine, removing them should increase the required ER immediately.
3) Who is catching particles?
Many teams "feel fine" because the carry is on-field when particles arrive. Change the order, and the carry suddenly needs 30-60% more ER.
When testing without a support, keep your funneling consistent. Otherwise you are measuring a different rotation.
4) Is your rotation wasting energy?
Common energy leaks:
- Bursts used late (you overcap energy on supports)
- Skills used off-cooldown (fewer particles over time)
- Swapping away right before particles arrive
5) Do you have a backup battery plan?
If the team only works when Columbina is present, you have three realistic fixes:
- Add ER: ER sands, ER weapon, or more ER substats until the target is met.
- Add white particles: a Favonius weapon on someone who can crit consistently.
- Add a same-element teammate: even a simple battery can drop ER needs a lot.
How to test this in 30 seconds with ER QuickCalc
- Build the full team in ER QuickCalc (Zibai + Columbina + the other two).
- Select the rotation preset that matches how you actually play (Quick Swap, Hypercarry, etc.).
- Read the ER targets for each character.
- Now replace Columbina with your best "neutral" option (or leave the slot empty if you are just stress-testing).
- Compare the new ER target for Zibai.
Rule of thumb: if Zibai required ER increases by 30% or more, the original duo was providing major battery value.
A quick example (numbers are illustrative)
- Team A: Zibai with Columbina → Zibai target: 170% ER
- Team B: Zibai without Columbina → Zibai target: 220% ER
That 50% jump usually means the support was doing at least one of these: generating same-element particles, funneling cleanly, or proccing Favonius consistently.
Bottom line
"Is this character good without that teammate?" is often just "How much ER do I need when the battery is gone?"
Use the checklist, run the two versions in ER QuickCalc, and you will have a clean answer fast.
Note: ER targets are based on community-tested theorycraft assumptions (aligned with KQM-style models). Real gameplay can vary with enemy count, particle RNG, and execution.
