Why Xiangling Is the ER Benchmark of the Game
Xiangling's 80-cost Elemental Burst (Pyronado) with a 20-second cooldown is the most-studied energy economy in Genshin Impact — because she is simultaneously one of the best characters in the game and one of the easiest to build wrong. Her Skill (Guoba Attack) generates only 3–4 Pyro particles per cast on a 12-second cooldown, and almost always while she is off-field, where particles are worth just 1.8 Energy instead of 3.0. The result: Xiangling's ER requirement is decided almost entirely by who else is on her team.
This guide uses the same particle math ER QuickCalc simulates for every team, so you can see exactly where each breakpoint comes from — and verify it with the ER calculator afterward.
The Math Behind Xiangling's Breakpoints
Xiangling needs 80 Energy per rotation. Her self-generation is weak: one Guoba cast (~3.5 particles, often caught off-field) plus her own burst refunds nothing. Everything else must come from teammates. The three numbers that matter:
- Bennett's tap Skill: 2–3 Pyro particles every 5 seconds — the best battery in the game
- Same-element catch: 3.0 Energy on-field, 1.8 off-field
- Rotation length: standard National rotations run 20 seconds
Worked example (National, Bennett battery): over 20 seconds, Bennett casts his Skill twice (~5 Pyro particles) and Guoba fires once (~3.5 particles). If Xiangling catches those 8.5 particles on-field: 8.5 × 3.0 = 25.5 Energy. Required ER = (80 ÷ 25.5) − 1 ≈ 214%. In practice, catch timing and Bennett's funnel reduce that to the accepted 180–200% range — which is exactly where theory and gameplay converge.
Worked example (no Bennett): with only Guoba's 3.5 particles per rotation, Xiangling generates ~10 Energy even caught perfectly. Required ER = (80 ÷ 10) − 1 = 700% — physically impossible. Teams without Bennett must add Favonius procs, a second Pyro battery, or accept Pyronado downtime. This is why "Xiangling needs Bennett" is a real constraint, not a meme.
ER Breakpoints by Team Composition
| Team | Recommended ER | Key Energy Source |
|---|---|---|
| National (Bennett + Xingqiu + Flex) | 180–200% | Bennett tap-E funnel (2–3 p / 5s) |
| National, Favonius on a teammate | 170–190% | 6 neutral particles per Favonius proc |
| Raiden National (Raiden + Xingqiu + Bennett) | 150–170% | Raiden burst refund (15–27 flat Energy by Chakra stacks) |
| Raiden National, Engulfing Raiden | 140–160% | Higher Raiden uptime → more refunds |
| Overvape (Fischl + Xingqiu + Bennett) | 200–230% | Fischl's Electro particles don't help Pyro; weaker funnel |
| Burgeon / teams without Bennett | 220–260% | No Pyro battery; Emblem + ER Sands mandatory |
Read the pattern: every ~30% of ER you cut comes from a teammate, not from artifacts. A battery (Bennett), a refund (Raiden), or a Favonius weapon each removes roughly one artifact roll worth of ER from Xiangling.
Weapon Choices and Their ER Contribution
| Weapon | ER Substat (Lv90) | Practical Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Engulfing Lightning (R1) | 55.1% | Drops artifact ER needs by ~2 rolls; best damage option |
| The Catch (R5) | 45.9% | Best F2P: big ER + Burst DMG bonus, free via fishing |
| Favonius Lance (R5) | 30.6% | Battery for the whole team; low personal damage |
| Staff of the Scarlet Sands | 0% (CRIT) | Requires ER Sands (+51.8%) and 200%+ from artifacts — expensive but real |
| Dragon's Bane | 0% (EM) | Vape damage weapon; only works with Bennett funneling |
Artifacts: Emblem Turns ER Into Damage
4-Piece Emblem of Severed Fate is Xiangling's best set for two reasons. First, it solves her energy problem directly with an ER Sands. Second, it converts that ER into Burst damage: 25% of ER above 100%, capped at a 75% Burst DMG bonus (reached at 300% ER). Practically, at 200% ER you gain +25% Burst DMG from the set on top of your energy — ER on Xiangling is never a dead stat. Priorities: ER Sands → CRIT circlet → ATK Goblet (Pyro DMG if you have the ER from elsewhere) → ER/CRIT substats until your team breakpoint.
Sample National Rotation and Where the Energy Lands
A 20-second National cycle shows the catch order in practice:
- Bennett E → Q (2–3 Pyro particles drop)
- Xiangling E (Guoba deploys; ~3.5 particles across its duration) → swap to Xiangling to catch Bennett's particles on-field
- Xingqiu E → Q (5 Hydro particles — caught by whoever is on-field, typically the flex)
- Xiangling Q — Pyronado snapshots, then swap off
The critical moment is step 2: catching Bennett's particles on Xiangling (3.0 Energy each) instead of leaving her off-field (1.8 each) is worth roughly 8–10 Energy per rotation — the equivalent of ~15% ER. Players who "feel like" their Xiangling is energy-starved at 180% are usually failing this catch, not lacking ER.
Constellation Impact on Her ER
- C4 extends Pyronado's duration by 40% (13.4s total), which stretches her Burst across longer rotations — slightly lowers the pressure to burst exactly on cooldown, but does not change her 80-cost math.
- C6 grants the whole party +15% Pyro DMG during Pyronado — pure damage, no energy effect.
- Neither constellation refunds energy. At any constellation, her ER targets above still apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 180% or 220% better for Xiangling?
Whichever matches your team. In National with Bennett, 180–200% and you can push CRIT. Without Bennett, 220%+ or Pyronado misses a rotation. Check the team first, then the stats.
Does Guoba generate particles?
Yes — 3–4 Pyro particles per cast, but on a 12-second cooldown and usually while Xiangling is off-field, so they are worth ~1.8 Energy each. Guoba is a bonus, not a battery.
Should I use ER Sands with The Catch?
Almost always yes. The Catch gives 45.9% ER, an ER Sands adds 51.8% — together they cover most of the 180–200% target, leaving substats free for CRIT.
Verify Your Exact Number
Every breakpoint above assumes a clean rotation and perfect catches. Your real requirement shifts with weapon refinement, constellation level, and rotation length. Enter your Xiangling team in ER QuickCalc and get the precise ER target for your exact build — then spend the saved artifact rolls on CRIT.
